The Trews Photo Gallery – Social, Orlando
Knowing I was headed out to review Carbon Leaf last week, a trusted friend made it clear that I needed to get to The Social early to catch The Trews. The Canadien quartet have been making compelling music for two decades yet had somehow failed to really hit my radar. Now that I have had a chance to catch them live, I realize that I’ve got some catching up to do. This band is damn good.

This pre-Rock Boat gig was surprisingly their first ever to Orlando, but I’m hoping it wasn’t my last chance to see The Trews in the area. On this night, they were advertised as acoutic, but they were anything but unplugged. They had acoustic guitars slung over their shoulders, but these four absolutely rocked the house, perched on their bar stools.
Colin MacDonald has an amazing voice that at times had me flashing back to Chris Cornell. I love Cornell’s voice, but MacDonald’s was actually a bit more dynamic. His brother John-Angus MacDonald delivered impressive guitar work throughout the forty minute set. There were precious few Trewbadours in the crowd, but the Carbon Leaf crowd was instantly drawn into The Trews sound, and they converted more that a handful of folks.
