Show Review: Explosions in the Sky
Explosions in the Sky, an indie rock band from Austin, Texas, gave a captivating performance April 12th at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg. With sounds that range from chill bass to exploding guitars and drums, Explosions in the Sky absolutely live up to their name. They are one of those rare bands that actually manage to sound better live than in a recording studio.
Indie rock songs without lyrics come around occasionally, and can make a stir in the industry, but Explosions in the Sky is changing the way that music itself is seen. The band initially considered including vocals, but soon decided that they enjoyed being instrumentalists only, with few exceptions. The idea of them just being a band, and not led by a singer, appealed to the four friends, and their sound set them apart from most of the other bands in the industry.
“Your Hand in Mine”, their most popular hit, has gathered over 29 million views on Spotify, and is a largely emotional song. As odd as it may sound to consider the emotional impact of a band who doesn’t sing, the feelings of the music left the audience vulnerable and teary-eyed.
Explosions in the Sky are such a unique band, and their live performances are life-changing. Their exploding guitar rhythm was complemented by a deep bass – thumping, almost like a heartbeat – and echoing in the audience’s chests. The constant thumping—a reminder to us all that in music, there is life.
