The 2017 incarnation of Welcome To Rockville was another one for the ages. There was a bit of negative buzz about the lineup beforehand, but I suspect the great majority of fans who left Metropolitan Park on Sunday night, left the venue thoroughly satisfied. Like me…
After 20+ hours under a blazing sun, a treacherous trip down I-95 and a much needed, long, hot shower, I’m back from Welcome To Rockville 2017 and counting down the days until the most powerful rock show in Florida (hopefully) makes its triumphant 2018 return. Oh, if you’re counting along, it’s only 261 more days.
Jacksonville Florida’s annual Welcome To Rockville festival brings metal, classic rock, alternative, and punk acts together downtown for two days of sweat, dirt, and good times. By mid-day Saturday two of the weekend’s stand out acts had already played, appearing on the same stages that bands like Soundgarden and Def Leppard would later grace. As Lions and Goodbye June both made the most of their short sets, bringing skill, charisma, and timeless influence onstage.
Well, Day 1 at Welcome To Rockville is in the books, and as I get ready for another day in the sweltering fields of Metropolitan Park, I thought I’d squeeze in a quick post on three of the smaller acts from Day 1 who caught my attention. There were some monstrous performances from bands you would expect, but these three acts are new on my radar, but three bands I will make sure to see again.
Set times for Welcome To Rockville have been made public, and the set-up and scheduling this year, are just about perfect. This year’s event will unfold over three stages, packed with blistering rock ‘n roll on Saturday and Sunday, April 29th and 30th.
I’ve been to this thunderous celebration of hellacious hard rock for each of the past four years. The festival on the banks of the St. Johns River always features a handful of huge metal bands and five times as many smaller bands on the cusp. There’s definitely something for everyone blaring on one of the Welcome To Rockville stages at any time, but here are five bands that everyone should check out.
