Sir Sly, Wolf Gang Show Review

Shortly after arriving at the nearly sold out Social, we quickly realized we were in for more of a treat than we anticipated.

The night was billed as a co-headlining appearance by Sir Sly and Wolf Gang, two up-and-coming bands we’ve been covering for the past year.  These two talented bands had created all of the buzz, but the opening band, the creative female-fronted Secret Someone’s stole the show.

The event was a Cherrytree Records showcase and a great opportunity for Alt-Rock fans to catch a glimpse of three acts with tremendous potential.  Considering how difficult it is to breakthrough to stardom in today’s rock landscape, the odds are stacked against all three of these acts achieving stardom, but with the talent on display, I’d be surprised if at least one of the acts doesn’t quickly move on to bigger things.

Secret Someones

The moment this Brooklyn-based band took the stage, they grabbed my attention. Uniquely fronted by three women, the quartet was balanced by a bleached blonde drummer Zach Jones, decked out in an I (Heart) Chad T-Shirt.  Throughout their diverse thirty minute set, all three women, Bess Rogers, Hannah Winkler, and Lelia Broussard, traded off lead vocals and offered excellent harmonies for their bandmates.  The juxtaposition of their tight, sweet harmonies, playing off of a raw rock backbone, with clear punk underpinnings made their sound a unique blend of rock that absolutely demands attention. They were fun and interactive onstage and played well off of each other.

Wolf Gang

We caught this UK band when they passed through The Social two summers ago. They put on an excellent show then, and didn’t disappoint this time either. Interestingly, back on their 2012 tour, they were sampling new music from a yet-t0-be-released album; a show lead singer Max McElligott referenced during “Something Unusual.” On this night, we were treated to a nice glimpse of what to expect on the soon to be released Alveron. They kicked off their set with “Black River,” the first single from the album, and closed with the title track.

McElligott provided a stirring and passionate acoustic version of “Ghost In My Life,” a song that he hinted will sound much different on the album.  They also played their next single, “Lay Your Love Down” which featured the full band at their rollicking best.  The band also offered a nice assortment of tracks from their debut album, Suego Faults, highlighted by a rousing version of the fan-favorite “Lions In Cages.”

Sir Sly

This LA trio closed the night with a captivating offering of synth-driven indie rock. Their stage set-up was unique, as the stage was peppered with four different keyboard set-ups.   The trio is touring with two additional musicians, and they delivered a sonically robust cohesive set. Their songs were highlighted by pristine musicianship and catchy hooks. Lead singer, Landon Jacobs is clearly the focal point and with his mesmerizing vocals, it’s for good reason.

Jacobs interacted with drummer Hayden Coplen throughout the set and they played well off of each other. Multi-instrumentalist, Jason Suwito traded off instruments seemingly after every song, at times playing keyboards, guitar and bass – and mastering each.  The highlights of the set were a well-received offering of the title track from their forthcoming album, “You Haunt Me,” and their late 2013 hit, “Gold.” The only downside? Their set was virtually played in the dark…

One of the most intriguing hard rock bands around, Eyes Set To Kill announce their ‘Little Liar Tour’ which includes a handful of dates in Florida. Led by sisters Alexia and Anissa Rodriguez, they are clearly not a typical “chick band.” They offer energetic, gritty rock with a melodic edge and have a good reputation as a live act.

“We are exceedingly grateful to have dedicated diehard fans which makes being on the road so worth it” states ESTK singer, Alexia Rodriguez. “We’ve been fortunate to live our dream and bring our music to our fans while introducing them to some fresh, up and coming bands as well” adds Rodriguez.

They are touring in support of their most recent album Masks, which you can pick up on iTunes just above, and are definitely a band worth seeing live. While you wait for them to hit your city, check out the disturbing yet captivating video for “Infected”

Nine Inch Nails Is Headed to Orlando

Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails will be stopping in Orlando as part of their 2013 Tension World Tour.  NIN is just the latest in a quickly growing list of huge acts to route their tours through the city’s fantastic new showpiece, The Amway Center.  The band is renowned for their incredible live performances and imaginative stage show. The show date? October 31st, that’s Halloween – seems like perfect timing.

“‘Tension’ picks up where ‘Lights in the Sky’ left off. This is the full-on Nine Inch Nails live experience realized as we never could before,” says Reznor. For those of you who have not yet captured a live Nine Inch Nails performance, it’s a special show that should not be missed.

They’ll be touring in support of their forthcoming album, Hesitation Marks. The much anticipated release, is their ninth studio album, and first since 2008’s acclaimed release The Slip. It also happens to be 25 years since the uber-talented Reznor created the band in 1988.  The lead single “Came Back Haunted” is available and is already receiving plenty of airplay. (Check it out here: Came Back Haunted – iTunes)

Reznor is the heart and sould of the band – really the only permanent member.  He wirtes all of the songs and is an explosive, dynamic front man.  The band’s live shows always take on a totally different feel live as the musicians and environment change.  You can also expect a cutting-edge state of the art light show.
