Interview: Jared Watson of Dirty Heads

Dirty Heads’ Jared Watson Interview

In a whirlwind weekend of Florida festival appearances, we managed to snag a few minutes of Jared  (Dirty J) Watson’s time as they traveled across the Sunshine State, on their way to the Main Stage at the inaugural Big Orlando Festival.

Cretin: You guys seem to tour constantly. Every month the band is somewhere out on the road, Does it ever get old?
Jared Watson:
Yes and no. You definitely get burned out being away from home and your friends and family and wife or girlfriend. But nothing compares to live music. There’s something magical in the energy of a live show that I just love so much. I really enjoy this job because once you get burned out on touring you can go home for a couple months and write music or design merch or do something totally different with your off time. I’d rather work two months straight and have a month off after then work five days a week and have two days off on the weekend. Also it’s the best way to connect to your fans. I think we pride ourselves in being a touring live band. Rather than a studio act.

Cretin: As much as you tour, you also pour out new music at a great pace, with basically a new album every summer for the past few years. Should we expect another offering next summer?
Jared Watson: No we will probably be touring off of this album for the next year, until 2016. I think this album has legs and longevity. There’s so many good songs and now we are going overseas. We will see how we feel in a year or two. We’ve never done an all reggae album we have been talking about going to Jamaica and maybe cutting a small EP in between the next full length. We like to switch it up and keep it fresh and entertaining for not only our fans but us as musicians.

Cretin: I interviewed Josh from Radical Something last month (they cite Dirty Heads as major influences). He described their sound as “California music” – does that resonate for Dirty Heads, as well? (see our interview with Josh Cocktail here)
Jared Watson: I think it did more so on the first album but now I’ve realized the Dirty Heads is so much more. I think we have come up with a sound that’s totally original and the more I travel the more I realize our message and style of music resonates all over the world.

Cretin: Festivals like those in Florida this weekend are great for the fans. Is there any time for you to enjoy the music? If so, any bands that you are particularly interested in seeing?
Jared Watson: I mean the line up is pretty fucking stacked they are all great bands. And of course that’s one of the perks of festivals! I’m really excited for ALT -j also our friends in young the giant and new politics. They have insane live shows, And great songs.

He’s absolutely correct, this line-up is pretty damn good. Lots of killer live acts, led by this six-piece out of Huntington Beach.

If you are going to be at the Fairgrounds on Sunday, do not miss this band live, the Dirty Heads always put on a great show! Check out these three bands Sunday at The Big Orlando:

  • Dirty Heads at 5:35 on The Monster Main Stage
  • Young The Giant at 7:00 on The Monster Main Stage
  • New Politics at 7:50 at the Jagermeister Stage

Noel Gallagher Announces New Album Details

Noel Gallagher Shares Details on Chasing Yesterday

Make sure you Like our Facebook at the top of our site for more rock music coverage.

Today, October 13th, Noel Gallagher announced the completion and release date of the brand new Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds album, Chasing Yesterday. The announcement was made during a live Q&A streamed on Facebook and hosted by BBC 6 Music’s Matt Everitt.  Chasing Yesterday will be released on March 3rd.

The first single from the album, ‘In The Heat Of The Moment’ will be released on November 17th digitally and on limited edition 7 inch vinyl with B side entitled ‘Do The Damage.’ Today, you can catch a video version below.

From the press release:

Chasing Yesterday marks a new chapter and sound for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. It’s the first album to be produced as well as written by Noel and features a much broader array of instrumentation than ever before; the result is a rich, expansive and multi-layered record, drawing from a range of disparate influences – from west coast rock to classic rock’n’roll and even some space jazz (!) – whilst still being very obviously a completely cohesive body of work. On producing the album, Noel said:

“It was a major pain in the arse. It’s not that I’ve ever had people telling me what to write or what direction to go in, but managing sessions from one end of the week to the other proved extremely difficult. I had all these people looking at me and saying: ‘right, what are we doing today?’ I was making the whole thing up as I went along.”

The first single to be taken from the album will be, ‘In The Heat Of The Moment.’ This hypnotic track was inspired by a documentary in which an astronaut said that going into space for the first time feels like touching the face of God. “If that’s not an opening line for a song I don’t know what is” said Mr Gallagher.

The beautiful opening track ‘Riverman’ is an expansive song with several guitar and saxophone solos. Noel said of the track:

“We made a demo of Riverman and we knew it was amazing,” “And then I was listening to [sax-laden one-hit wonder from 1974] Pinball by Brian Protheroe and thought: Shall I actually get a saxophone player? And what if I get him to play not one but two solos? I know I’m going to be accused of sax crimes. But fuck it. There’s nobody to tell me not to do it. And when you listen to that saxophone, please, don’t think about the guy from Spandau Ballet.”

The record’s emotional closer, ‘Ballad Of The Mighty I’ sees Johnny Marr join with Noel on guitar duties.

“I tried to get him to play on the last album but it never happened,” said Gallagher. “So when I put this track together and knew he would be perfect for it I called him and asked if I could send him the rough mix. He said: ‘No, I don’t want to hear it. I’m just going to react to it on the day.’ He didn’t even want any pointers. Well, that was brave of him. He just arrived with two guitars and a bag of effects pedals. And I have to say, he’s unbelievable. He’s way up there, on another level to the rest of us. The result is a burst of energy that helped make Mighty I one of the best songs I’ve ever written.”

This album follows the huge success of the double platinum eponymous debut album that has sold 770,000 copies to date in the UK alone, and a live schedule that saw Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds visit 32 countries and play 143 shows over a 15 month touring period.

Album track listing:
1. Riverman
2. In The Heat Of The Moment
3. The Girl With X-Ray Eyes
4. Lock All The Doors
5. The Dying Of The Light
6. The Right Stuff
7. While The Song Remains The Same
8. The Mexican
9. You Know We Can’t Go Back
10. Ballad Of The Mighty I

Three Days Grace Release “I Am Machine”

Three Days Grace continues to show us why they’re one of the most successful active rock artists ever. This talented Canadian foursome simply offers continuous active rock anthems.

This week, they follow-up the hugely successful hit “Painkiller,” their 12th #1 Active Rock single, with another song destined to reach that same impressive pinnacle.

“I Am Machine” is the second straight highlight offering from their forthcoming album release, expected to hit the streets in March, 2015. Judging from these first two singles, we’re in for one hell of an album.

The new release is available now on iTunes here: I Am Machine – Single; and you can check out the video below.

Neil Sanderson offers up: “Sonically, we wanted to create a ‘machine-like’ sound in parts of the song. We were inspired by the images from the opening scene of Tim Burton’s ‘Edward Scissorhands’…relentless machines turning and churning, never ceasing to operate. Lyrically the song is about how sometimes you feel like you are in an endless routine and cannot escape. Every day seems the same. No freedom from the vicious cycle that your life can sometimes become…no control, you begin to feel numb to the world around you, as you yearn to just feel anything, any emotion.”

The song was co-written by the band, produced by Gavin Brown and mixed by Chris Lord-Alge. Three Days Grace re-teamed with Gavin Brown, who produced the band’s platinum-selling 2003 self-titled debut album. “We went back to our roots a bit and recaptured that collaborative feeling of being in a band and bringing out the best ideas in each other,” says Sanderson. “Gavin was a huge part of that in the beginning and we feel like we’re back in those days where we’re high-fiving each other with guitars in our hands.”

Weezer’s Ninth Album Coming Soon

Weezer – Everything Will Be Alright In The End

Alternative Rock legends, Weezer exploded into the rock ‘n roll scene with the release of their blue album twenty years ago. This September, they’ll release their ninth full-length, Everything Will Be Alright In The End.

Featuring their first hit, “Undone (The Sweater Song),” the Blue album was an integral release in a year that we at RARA’s Farm felt was a seminal point in rock ‘n roll history. (Check out 1994 Rock Albums) The album also featured “Say It Ain’t So,” “Buddy Holly” and my personal favorite, “In the Garage.” The album, which sold over 3 million copies, was produced by Ric Ocasek of Cars fame.

For the next seven years, the band kind of meandered about, before reuniting with Ocasek and adding bassist Scott Shriner. The subsequent release of their third album, known affectionately as the Green album was another huge success, featuring “Hash Pipe” and “Island In the Sun.”

Flash forward to 2014, and twenty years after it all started for Weezer, they’re back in the studio with Ocasek. Based on what happened the first two times this crew collaborated, I am extremely anxious to hear the new tracks. Featuring original members, Rivers Cuomo, Brian Bell, Patrick Wilson and Shriner, the band is coming off another hiatus. This similar situation and band make-up to the pre-Green album era adds yet another reason to look forward to the release of Everything Will Be Alright In The End. That anticipation will need to carry us thorough the release date of September 30th.

In the meantime, check out the first single, Back To The Shack, on youtube:

Early reports indicate that we’re in store for some of the most heartfelt songs in the band’s history. Meshing this twenty years of maturity with many of the original music-making ingredients lends tremendous promise to the release. The only thing the album is missing is a ‘color’ moniker.
