Exploring the Gasparilla Music Festival Line-up

Gasparilla Music Festival March 10 – 11

One of Florida’s most diverse music festivals returns to Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in Downtown Tampa this March, and boasts a fantastically appealing lineup.  We highlight our five can’t miss bands, but there’s not a weak act in the lineup’s first ten acts (more to be released soon).

Win the Ultimate Rockville VIP Experience

TeamRock and the Jacksonville Jaguars have teamed with our friends at Welcome To Rockville for a pretty cool giveaway, including a trip to the event from anywhere in North America or the UK.

I get a lot of emails about giveaways and promotions and 90% of them end up in the Recycle Bin, but this one looks pretty damn good for Rock And Roll Animals like us here at RARA’s Farm!

Luke Melsenti Discusses Earthday Birthday 22

Orlando rockers Leaving Haven are poised to explode onto the active rock scene and were recently selected to play at WJRR’s Earthday Birthday, and we took the opportunity to chat with the band’s guitarist Luke Melsenti about the appearance at Orlando’s premiere rock festival.

Make sure you Like RARAsFarm’s Facebook Page and Follow us on Twitter for local Orlando rock music coverage.

Cretin: Tell me about your performance last week at Elixir any thoughts about the fan support there that sent you on to the slot at Earthday Birthday?
Luke Melsenti: We had a fantastic time playing Elixir! Playing an intimate acoustic show right downtown was a great way to entice our fan base to come out on a weekday night. The turnout was excellent and we received a lot of compliments from our fans about how much they enjoyed our set.

Cretin: You played an acoustic set that night. Will we be seeing future acoustic sets? Any acoustic offerings at Earthday Birthday?
Luke Melsenti: Absolutely. We’ve done several acoustic sets in the past and it’s something we always enjoy doing. We have been asked by EDBD to support the acoustic stage that day. We performed on the acoustic stage last year as well.

Cretin: What stage and time will fans be able to catch you?
Luke Melsenti: Leaving Haven will be performing on the acoustic stage again this year, however we have not been informed what time we’re going to rock the shit out of it yet!

Cretin: What’s your favorite crowd or venue you’ve played previously?
Luke Melsenti: I would say our “home field” where we feel most excited has to be House of Blues here in Orlando. It’s always the best time when we play there. Another favorite spot of ours is Venue 578 in Downtown Orlando. It has a great stage and lights and even better atmosphere. Those bigger shows always have an excellent crowd.

Cretin: How has the band’s sound and show changed from your last EDBD appearance?
Luke Melsenti: We made our first appearance at EDBD in 2013 where we opened the second stage, That year we performed as a full band. Last year and this year are both acoustic so naturally the sound and set are going to be different. This year I’m sure we’ll find something to do to change it up.

Cretin: Should we expect any surprises in your setlist at EDBD?
Luke Melsenti: Surprises? I don’t know, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise now would it?

Cretin: Any recommendations for other fans for bands they should not miss?
Luke Melsenti: If fans want to start their day off right they will be there right at the start to see our boys in SoulSwitch. They’re opening the main stage and are going to tear it apart! They’ll probably have to delay the next band due to repairs needed… just sayin’!

Cretin: Are there any bands you are most looking forward to seeing at EDBD who you have not seen before?
Luke Melsenti: I can’t speak for everyone but I’m most excited to see Slash, Rise Against and Nothing More.

Cretin: Some excellent choices, and two of our favorite touring bands on that list. See our earlier review for Rise Against and Nothing More

Big Orlando Line-Up Review and a few Samples

Big Orlando Line-Up and Videos

Well there’s been some exciting change since I last wrote about the Big Orlando, Central Florida’s biggest rock music event in years.  The line-up was filled out, and the newly announced bands are pretty damn impressive.

Make sure you Like our Facebook at the top of our site for more rock music coverage.

Make sure you check out some videos of our featured bands below the article.

We already knew about Alternative rock legends Weezer and one of the hottest bands around, Fall Out Boy, riding the huge success of their latest single “Centuries.”  In addition, we were excited to see our favorite edgy ska band, Dirty Heads, Alt-Nation favorite Young The Giant and two very hot alternative bands, Big Data and J. Roddy Walston and The Business.

Since that first review, things have been kicked up a notch.  The big news for me was the addition of Sleeper Agent.  The Kentucky-based band has one of the most unique sounds on rock radio today, and they are famous for their entertaining shows.  They are a can’t miss band.  Another band in the same vein with a great live reputation is another newly added act, New Politics.

Know Hamilton, of “We Can Work It Out” fame is another intriguing artist.  An interesting surprise for me was the addition of The Crazy Carls. We’ve wandered into The Flagler Tavern in New Smyrna Beach twice in the past year and both times, found these talented guys gracing the stage. They are uber-talented and charismatic as hell, and local guys to top it off.  Make sure you check them out.

The final four announced bands are all talented as well: Bear Hands, Twin Atlantic, The Hip Abduction and A Heroes Fate.  All told – 14 excellent alternative rock bands in one fantastic day in Central Florida – December 7th and Central Florida Fairgrounds.

Tickets are available here: The Big Orlando

If you cannot make the 12/7 show, most of these same bands are playing the Big Ticket in Jacksonville on 12/5. More info here: The Big Ticket.

Rock On!

To whet your appetite, here are some live looks at the 5 bands we are most looking forward to. Like our Facebook page as we will be adding video for every performing band this weekend as we countdown to The Big Orlando.

The Big Orlando – Huge Alt-Rock Festival Heads to Orlando

The Big Orlando Alt-Rock Festival

After a few years of watching the season’s best alt-rock festivals hit Jacksonville and Tampa, we finally get to see this killer line-up make a stop at Orlando. This is something we hoped for when we heard that X107.3 was coming to Orlando, and couldn’t be happier to see this come to fruition (See our prediction here).

Make sure you Follow our Twitter  below, and Like our Facebook to the right for updates on this event and all Central Florida rock concerts

December 7th will be the date which will live in infamy for Orlando rockers.  The headliners are a great cross-section of artists spanning the alternative rock scene over the past twenty years.  We will get to see two RARA’s Farm favorites, Weezer and Dirty Heads, as well as other stalwarts who we have not caught live yet: Fall Out Boy, Young The Giant,  J Roddy, Big Data, Bear Hands, Twin Atlantic, Islander, and more.  J. Roddy, Bear Hands and Big Data are three acts we are anxious to see.

The venue for the first annual edition of The Big Orlando festival is the Central Florida Fairgrounds. I absolutely love the Metropolitan Park venue for the Big Ticket in Jacksonville and am curious to see how the The Big Orlando stacks up.  And, how long before local fans shorten this to the Big “O”?

“After four years of success with X102.9 in Jacksonville and The Big Ticket, I am very excited to launch this new festival with Cox Media’s new alternative station X107.3 and AEG Live. We look forward to bringing an incredible alternative festival to Orlando,” says The Big Orlando producer Danny Wimmer of Danny Wimmer Presents.

For those of you interested, the Jacksonville festival, The Big Ticket, which is one of the best run festivals we’ve experienced in the past, is being held on Friday December 5th.  Very similar line-up, but substitute Alt-J, Chevelle and New Politics for Young The Giant, Twin Atlantic and Islander.  Sounds like a nice long weekend, eh?
