Mabel’s Psychedelic Pop Rock

When I first poured Mabel through my headphones, my mood immediately lightened and a big smile creased my face.  Hang in there with me for a second, but this energetic foursome actually reminded me of a cross between Dion and The Last Royals, yup both New York rockers who were separated by a mere 5 decades, but they both had that infectious jangly, distorted Gotham pop rock sound.

The Harlots “On My Way” Single Review

The more music I hear from Australia, the more convinced I am that the country is quickly becoming the hottest incubator for fresh rock ‘n roll.

The latest band to catch my attention is Harlot, a talented six-piece from Melbourne, Australia.  They’re a group of twenty-somethings who are about to deliver their fantastic new single “On My Way” on June 26th.

The infectious rocker is in invigorating call to action. It’s a rare rock song that is both raw and exquisitely polished at the same time.  The single is a guitar-driven effort laced with sharp hooks, which are masterfully paired with catchy vocals from Tom Pitts (the nephew of Nick Cave of Bad Seeds fame).

Pitts’ vocals are vibrant and quite diverse and the song is a great landscape for his talents, but the lush musical bed is even more captivating. Hard-driving drums provide the perfect backdrop for a song that is drenched with excellent guitar work throughout.  It’s an catchy and generous 4:23 gem that wonderfully builds to a soaring close.  Check it out and let me know your thoughts.

Sheppard – Bombs Away Album Review

While this talented Australian sextet managed to break through the American music scene with their energetic hit “Geronimo,” they were making a smashing impact on the music scene back home in Australia with the album that just hit the streets on our shores.

When I reviewed their EP last year, I closed with “Bombs away,” a nod to their fantastic hit “Geronimo;” apparently, the six talented musicians in Sheppard were thinking similarly. The new album, titled Bombs Away, features the aforementioned hit, as well as a diverse selection of tracks that lean a bit more to pop than they do to rock. In either case, it’s good stuff, and is destined to become a summer staple here in the States.

The album closes with “Flying Away,” another track also included on the EP. It’s a well-produced journey that’s an absolute blast to listen to. Boy/Girl vocals, pristine harmonies and a plethora of masterfully interspersed musical parts – it’s good stuff, and a nice glimpse into the music that fills the remainder of the album bookended by these two hits.

Throughout the twelve offerings, we hear pop-infused indie rock that’s absolutely pleasing to the ears. “Let Me Down Easy” and Something Missing” are foot-tapping ditties laced with masterful harmonies and “A Grade Playa” is an interesting mix of distortion and tropical beats, while on the other end of the spectrum there’s “Halfway To Hell.” It’s unlike anything else on the album, but captivating and entertaining in it’s own, gritty, Cajun Rock way.

In general, I find the songs on the album that feature male vocals a bit more to my rock-oriented liking, but assume the female vocals on about half the tracks will appeal to folks more predisposed for pop. In any event, there are plenty of offerings for any fans of pop rock.

Check it out on iTunes above, and let me know your thoughts. This one will be filling the US airwaves this summer, just as did Down Under last summer.

Teens in Agnes Blue Dole Out Something Special

Agnes Blue Single Review

The first time I listened to this bluesy rocker, I loved it. When I went back and read the band’s bio and saw that the elder statesman in the band was a youthful 16 year-old, I was amazed.

If you dismiss the youth of the band members and focus only on the energetic debut single, “All Around,” you’ll be impressed by the fresh sound from Queensland, Australia’s Agnes Blue. The catchy song is a refreshing, spirited rocker. But it’s just not right to dismiss the fact that guitarist/singer Jack Blandford is the elder statesman by two years, at a grizzled 16 compared to his younger sister, 14 year-old Frea on drums.

A duo this young shouldn’t be making music this unique, this edgy, this polished, this GOOD. The song is a sweeping blues-infused rocker, which should appeal to any rock music fan. So much of the music tossed around as rock these days is watered down, synth-driven pop, but not this track. No, this is everything that’s good about rock ‘n roll. “All Around” is guitar driven rock, with sweet riffs, a killer solo, nice drums and gritty vocals that nicely conjure up images of Velvet Underground era Lou Reed. The quality of the song-writing and musicianship belies the band’s age, and demands attention.

Jack Blandford offered “‘All Around’ was an old song of mine. When preparing to record our second E.P, I saw it in an old song- writing book and thought we should try it out. It is a simple song and it worked straight away with the band. It’s got a great feel to it and it has a bit of surf/rock groove. Our producer James Russell also liked it from the start and he worked hard to get it sounding amazing.”

Check it out and let me know what you think?
