Crosby, Stills and Nash Announce Summer Tour

CSN 2014 Tour Announcement

This trio is rock royalty, and we in Florida will have the opportunity to see them live at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre this August.  They’ve toured on an off for nearly five decades, ever since their stunning breakthrough at a little festival in New York, Woodstock.

I’ve seen the trio recently, and their collective voice is still stirring, passionate and captivating. Personally, I’d prefer if “Y” was touring with “CSN” but this is a can’t miss event for any fans of rock music.

ORLANDO, FLORIDA [April 15, 2014] On the heels of their sold out March 2014 tour, David CrosbyStephen Stills and Graham Nash unite as “three together” and announced their U.S. summer tour dates. The group will perform songs from their extensive catalog, as well as new material from each member. CrosbyStills & Nash perform on August 7 at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 9 at 10 a.m.

CrosbyStills & Nash (CSN) are accompanied by its backing band featuring: Shane Fontayne (guitar), Steve DiStanislao (drums), Kevin McCormick (bass), James Raymond (keyboards), and Todd Caldwell (organ).  CSN perform amid a full slate of side and solo projects including:

  • Crosby undertakes a sold out solo tour in the U.S. in April in support of “Croz,” his first solo release in 20 years, five sold out shows at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, and two sold out shows at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. The album was released on January 28 on Blue Castle Records, the label Crosby and Nash founded in 2011, and debuted at #36 on the Billboard 200 chart.
  • Stills announced a 17-date solo tour, which starts May 8 in Santa Cruz, CA and ends on June 3 in Tucson, AZ.  He recently toured solo and with The Rides, his blues-rock trio with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Barry Goldberg; their album “Can’t Get Enough” was released last summer. “Carry On,” a four-CD box chronicling Stills’ career—produced by Nash and Joel Bernstein—also came out in 2013.
  • Nash recently wrapped a solo tour—followed by an ongoing book tour for his long-awaited autobiography “Wild Tales; A Rock & Roll Life,” published last September by Crown Publishing Group. He will be performing two solo shows at the brand new City Winery in Napa, CA on April 29 and 30. Nash also exhibited      his artwork and photography throughout 2013.

It has been more than four decades since CSN first harmonized in Laurel Canyon, and played its first-ever concert as a trio at the legendary Woodstock festival. Its members continue a creative partnership that is one of the most influential and enduring in music.  CSN have each been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice—with Crosby, Stills Nash, and a second time with The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and The Hollies, respectively. They are also in the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame; honored both for CSN as a group, and as individual, solo artists.

This summer, CrosbyStills & Nash are donating $1 per ticket sold to charity (excluding VIP and special benefit seat packages through their official website). Styx Was No Illusion at House of Blues

Styx Live

Styx Orlando Concert Review

When classic rock bands hit the road, you never know what you are going to see. Is it going to be an incredible concert or a bunch of old has-beens trying to relive their youth and cash in one last paycheck?

Yesterday, Styx came into town and played at our local House of Blues (Orlando). My wife and another couple decided to attend this concert and hoped for the best.  From the moment they came on stage and opened with “The Grand Illusion,” we knew that this band still rocked.   Tommy Shaw, James Young, Todd Sucherman, Lawrence Gowan and Ricky Phillips gave us a performance that left nothing to the imagination.

These talented performers, played for 2 hours and looked liked they truly enjoyed being on stage.  Their music was sharp and fun. You know that these guys work hard on stage when my wife said, “Tommy has smaller jeans than I do”.  None of these members were washed-up overweight has-beens just standing still and playing. After their opening number, Styx followed up with a powerful combination of “Too Much Time On My Hands,” “Fooling Yourself” and their first hit, “Lady.”

With the absence of former vocalist Dennis DeYoung, Lawrence Gowan had the job of singing some of Styx’s key songs. Lets just say, he is not Dennis, but tried hard.  Some of the other hits that stood out were “Mademoiselle,” and “Suite Madame Blue” which both were outstanding.

The band was animated all night, and were constantly bouncing around the stage.  With Shaw changing guitars on every song, his rendition of “Crystal Ball,” “Blue Collar Man” and “Fooling Yourself” were spot on.  His talent on the guitar and his voice are both strong.  Gowan’s keyboards rotated throughout the show and he put on quite a show spinning around his riser.  The stage was quite elaborate for the cozy venue with ramps behind the drum kit and copious lighting.

One of my friend Tammy’s personal favorites, “Come Sail Away” had the packed house singing and dancing.  After about 2 hours, Styx finished up with “Rocking The Paradise” and “Renegade.” It was a great, fun and entertaining concert but let’s just say that if  Tommy Shaw wasn’t there, then Styx would have been a Grand Illusion.
