Teens in Agnes Blue Dole Out Something Special

Agnes Blue Single Review

The first time I listened to this bluesy rocker, I loved it. When I went back and read the band’s bio and saw that the elder statesman in the band was a youthful 16 year-old, I was amazed.

If you dismiss the youth of the band members and focus only on the energetic debut single, “All Around,” you’ll be impressed by the fresh sound from Queensland, Australia’s Agnes Blue. The catchy song is a refreshing, spirited rocker. But it’s just not right to dismiss the fact that guitarist/singer Jack Blandford is the elder statesman by two years, at a grizzled 16 compared to his younger sister, 14 year-old Frea on drums.

A duo this young shouldn’t be making music this unique, this edgy, this polished, this GOOD. The song is a sweeping blues-infused rocker, which should appeal to any rock music fan. So much of the music tossed around as rock these days is watered down, synth-driven pop, but not this track. No, this is everything that’s good about rock ‘n roll. “All Around” is guitar driven rock, with sweet riffs, a killer solo, nice drums and gritty vocals that nicely conjure up images of Velvet Underground era Lou Reed. The quality of the song-writing and musicianship belies the band’s age, and demands attention.

Jack Blandford offered “‘All Around’ was an old song of mine. When preparing to record our second E.P, I saw it in an old song- writing book and thought we should try it out. It is a simple song and it worked straight away with the band. It’s got a great feel to it and it has a bit of surf/rock groove. Our producer James Russell also liked it from the start and he worked hard to get it sounding amazing.”

Distinctive New Rock from Soko

SOKO – Who Wears The Pants Single Review

Simply put, she’s one of the most fresh, diverse, unpredictable artists gracing today’s musical landscape, and she’s about to release her most rock-infused music of her blossoming career.

Make sure you Like RARAsFarm’s Facebook Page and Follow us on Twitter for rock music coverage.

French born Soko has proven herself a successful (award winning) actress, an accomplished producer, the intriguing subject of a hugely popular viral kissing video, and quite the diverse self-taught musician – and she’s just getting started!

Today, she announced the forthcoming release of My Dreams Dictate My Reality, her second full-length album, which will be released on March 3rd. The album which promises to be brimming “with angst, shouts, and beautiful chaos,” was produced by Ross Robinson who has previously worked with her favorite band The Cure. The album will be released on Soko’s record label Babycat Records and will feature a hypnotic duet, “Lovetrap,” with Ariel Pink.

Today, we get our first taste of what we’re in store for on My Dreams Dictate My Realities and the first tasty sip is intoxicating. “Who Wears The Pants” is an edgy upbeat rocker, boasting poignant lyrics about sexuality. Her vocals are reminiscent of raw, gritty garage rock, while the masterfully produced music is a mixed tempo joyride. It’s captivating stuff that leaves me thirsting for the full album release.

For folks interested in pre-ordering the album, she is offering the most creative pre-order packages that I’ve ever seen. Yeah, the normal perks like vinyl, or autographed copies are available, but you’ll also have the chance to tack on a shopping trip, a home-cooked meal, a pajama party and a whole lot more. Check it out here: Pre-Order Bundles

Killer New Metal from Night Demon

Night Demon Single Review

More than twenty years ago, I hosted a late night 80’s Metal Show on our college radio station in the mountains of Western Virginia. Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, Krokus, you know the stuff; I loved it then and still do today, and when I hear one of those tracks it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside… then I crank up the volume and start banging my head against the wall. Ah, sweet memories.

So, as I write this, and nurse my throbbing head, I do so with a smile plastered on my face, courtesy of Southern California’s Night Demon. The Ventura band’s aggressive new single, “Killer” evokes strong memories of all that was good in 80’s metal. It’s a catchy complete song with just enough rough edges to make it real and natural, and a song that absolutely demands to be played loudly.

The song immediately grabs you by throat with a scorching opening guitar riff, quickly followed by frenetic bass and powerful drums from Dusty Squires. Bassist and lead singer Jarvis Leatherby’s powerful vocals are gritty, yet absolutely easy to listen to, and Brent Woodward tosses in a few killer solos. Check the song out below and let me know what you think:

The trio is set to release their debut album, Curse Of the Damned on January 27, 2015 via Century Media, and if “Killer” is any indication of what to expect, hard rock fans are going to be pretty damn happy.

Fit For Rivals New Single: Freak Machine

They’re garnering tremendous buzz in the music industry, tearing up youtube, and impressing audiences across the country, and they are from our own backyard.

Fit For Rivals, a fresh, young band hailing from Jacksonville, released their new single titled “Freak Machine”, the title track for their new album set to be released in early 2015. Vocalist Renee Phoenix’s throaty growl, comparable to the vocal style of the legendary Joan Jett, blends perfectly with strong guitar riffs and a punchy beat bringing a song that could be overly upbeat, almost pop-like, back to a proper rock-n-roll sound.

This song will get into your head in a hurry, and you will find yourself moving to the beat on the first listen, and you will soon find you want a new fix of this sexy song to satisfy the itch it creates as it gets under your skin. You may find that you, as the lyrics say, “can’t shake it off. ”

I could only hope that “Freak Machine” gains much deserved radio play, but until then I know I can grab it on iTunes (Freak Machine – Single) or get a fix on Youtube:

I’m looking forward to the next time that Fit For Rivals finds their way to a billing at an Orlando venue.  In the meantime, fans in the Midwest will get the next opportunity to see them live, as they’ll be touring with Adelitas Way and Framing Hanley this Spring.

Buffalo Sunn – Releases New Music

New Music with a Classic Rock Vibe

Scotland’s Buffalo Sunn has released a captivating new single with a decidedly old school feel. It’s definitely a song worth a listen or twelve…

Make sure you Like RARAsFarm’s Facebook Page and Follow us on Twitter for rock music coverage.

“Ocean” is a delicious new alternative rocker with distinct 60’s classic rock influences. The six-piece outfit from Dublin, Ireland boasts a unique feel that’s both old and comfortable, and fresh and new at the same time.

The song is the first single off of their new album By The Ocean, By The Sea, nicely produced by Grammy Award winner Pat McCarthy (U2, Counting Crows, R.E.M.).  The track features luscious harmonies, catchy guitar riffs and just a bit of well-balanced distortion. It’s garage rock meets theatre rock – a hopeful song with intoxicating guitars and drums and it’s just a blast to listen to.

The music seems like it will translate nicely in a live setting, but for now, if you’re not in Europe you are out of luck. Hopefully the song will find its way to US radio and the band will make their way over to the States.

River City Extension Surfaces with New Song

River City Extension Readies New Album

I remember walking through the Social in Orlando a few years ago after wrapping up an interview with the sadly under-appreciated Drowning Men. On my way out, an eight-piece band crammed onto the postage stamp sized stage captured my attention.

Make sure you Follow our Twitter or Like our Facebook at the top of our site for more rock music coverage.

River City Extension were pure genius, a talented collection of diverse musicians playing their own very unique brand of rock music. So, I grabbed a beer or three and settled in to see what they were all about. (See that review here)

On that night, the talented band members traded off between at least fifteen different instruments, including trumpets, violins, mandolins and banjos.  Guitarist Joe Michelini fronted the octet, wrote the music and handled most of the vocals, although there were a few nice boy/girl arrangements. He has a distinctive voice, which was one of the highlights to the critically acclaimed album they were supporting on that tour. Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Your Anger was a masterpiece that finished #3 on our Best Albums of 2012 year-end review. And, for the three years since, we’ve been waiting for the new release.

rivercityextension-main

Well, the wait is just about over, as their new release, Deliverance will hit the streets on March 10, 2015.  The new album features ten tracks and boasts a new feel for the band as New Jersey native Michelini is working in more of a pure collaborative band atmosphere.

To get a glimpse of what the new quintet sounds like, take a listen to the first song off of the album, “Something’s Gotta Give.” It’s definitely a different feel from their last album, offering some of the traits that made Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Your Anger so special, while at other times moving in a totally new direction. I’m tempted to say that it’s a bit cacophonous, but in an all so endearing way. Interesting stuff. Check it out: Something’s Gotta Give

My Old Dutch Single Review

My Old Dutch With Unique Spin on 50’s Rock

They’re a unique blend of rock music. A band boasting a creative retro modern feel, and an intriguing sound.

My Old Dutch, an entertaining two-piece out of Melbourne have released a captivating new track with a clear 50’s vibe. It’s their first single and I guarantee you’ll be itching for more. They are a bit Stray Cats, a bit Social D and they dole out a raucous serving of rock ‘n roll. On “Howlin’ Marilyn” we sample them doling out a sentimental rockabilly beat with a healthy serving of fuzz and distortion.

A 2:49 excursion through the past and future of rock, and a hell of a lot of explosive guitar and drums. The vocals are pure 50’s, while the fuzzy guitar and hard-driving drums are more reminiscent of modern day Black Keys. It’s a fun, invigorating track from two talented guys that leaves me curious to see what’s in store next.

The low tech video is a fun journey, as well, as our protagonist deals with “Howlin’ Marilyn, his monstrous girlfriend. Check out the song and video below and let me know your thoughts.

Wicked Good Music From Dorothy

Dorothy Offers Gritty New Single

No adorable blue dress and ruby slippers here. Nope, this talented Dorothy is pouring out her gospel decked out in leather and animal prints.

Make sure you Like our Facebook at the top of our site for more rock music coverage.

Dorothy is a four-piece out of Los Angeles who are making a splash in the rock world despite the fact that they still haven’t released their first EP. They offer-up powerful, dirty rock ‘n roll with infectious hooks.

On their new single, “Wicked Ones,” we hear them at their thunderous best. The song features deep, soulful vocals that hearken back to fond memories of Janis Joplin and Nancy Wilson. The vocals command your attention, but are no more captivating than the music.

Powerful drums, hard driving bass and rhythmic handclaps dominate the song and make it an absolute blast to listen to.

Looking forward to more from this talented group as we wait the release of their debut EP. In the meantime, check out “wicked Ones” on Soundcloud below and let us know what you think?
