Mike Peters is Love Hope Strength

Marching On – The Alarm Are Back

New Song, New Album, New US Tour

The Alarm just might be my favorite band ever.  It’s a painful admission, because the Welsh rockers were making meaningful rock ‘n roll music and surging in popularity, when in 1991, lead singer Mike Peters, literally walked off stage in a Blaze of Glory. That moment quickly and shockingly ended their ascent to the pantheon of rock bands almost as soon as it began.

Although the original band ceased to exist 25+ years ago, Mike Peters never stopped making compelling music. whether it be solo effort, a reincarnated Alarm, or the wonderfully creative alter ego, Poppyfields.

Rock and Roll is a special thing and it is a genre that often offers fans amazing, unexpected moments, like at last year’s Warped Tour announcement when none other than Mike Peters sat down next to me and started to chat.  Quite the thrill for this huge Alarm fan, in a setting I would never have expected it.

The Alarm New Tour

Today, we learned the fantastic news that The Alarm have extended their Summer American Tour, including the addition of three Florida dates.  I’ll be at the Orlando show at the cozy Social, and just might find my way to Ponte Vedra Beach, as well. (see full tour dates below).

The reason for the tour? Mike Peters and his wife Jules have both been battling cancer, and are both in a good place right now, and the experiences have been fertile ground for songwriting.  The result is a brand new album.  Equals hits the streets this June and the early releases of the new music are quite appealing.

The Alarm New Single – “Two Rivers”

Why didn’t I have the newly anointed Union of Dunces review this? Because, well, they’re dunces, and as such, might not understand the majesty of Mike Peters and The Alarm.

“Two Rivers” is another fine canvas for Peters’ distinctive gritty voice. It’s another song from The Alarm built on poignant lyrics and powerful guitar riffs. On this one, we also get to hear a bit of Jules Peters’ nice work on keyboards. It’s an excellent song that promises to translate well in a live setting. I’ll find out when they come to Orlando – check the dates below to catch them in your town…

The Alarm New Album

When cruising The Alarm’s website for tour info today, I learned a bit more about the forthcoming album:

EQUALS is The Alarm’s first mainstream album release since 2010’s Direct Action. It is a barnstorming collection of 11 songs that act as a retrenchment of old values and a poignant reflection of the tough times Mike and his wife Jules have been through in recent years. Having recovered from lymph cancer in 1996, Mike was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia in 2005 and, after an initial recovery, he suffered a relapse in 2015. To compound an already terrifying situation, Jules, who plays piano and sings backing vocals, was diagnosed with breast cancer just after. All band activity was put on hold as the pair underwent treatment and it is only now, with both in remission, that The Alarm are firing on all cylinders again. The emotional repercussions, though, are all too evident in the spirit of life-affirming optimism in the face of adversity that runs through EQUALS.

“The songs were built out of what I had become,” says Mike. “I learnt a lot about myself and my relationship with Jules, and it’s all there in the music. I didn’t set out to write about what we were going through. All I had were these incredibly strong feelings that I found myself putting into words and writing down onto my phone without even thinking they might form the basis for songs.”
