Stone Sour – Taipei Person / Allah Tea

Song Review: Taipei Person / Allah Tea

Stone Sour have done it again. They have put together another album titled Hydrograd, which will be available everywhere June 30th. Stone Sour is Corey Taylor’s first band, though he is more famous for being Slipknot’s vocalist.

Somehow, in between playing Slipknot gigs such as their own festival, called Knotfest, writing books, and collaborating with other recording artists, Mr. Taylor finds time to craft masterpieces of sonic art like this composition.

“Taipei Person/ Allah Tea”, a title composed of two oronyms, is not at all about someone from the capitol city of Taiwan, nor the hot beverage enjoyed by the god of Islam. It is a hard hitting heavy rock song that begins with heavy riffs played in quick, head-bobbing time before Corey unleashes his trademark scream, letting you know immediately, without a doubt whose song this is.

The lyrics are cryptic, seeming to include something about all of humanity, itself, but having a message of hope… that we aren’t just stuck with whatever fate hands us. More so, it’s a self-portrait, Corey Taylor himself looming large in the foreground, almost a blur, at 75 miles an hour. The band, manages to keep up with the front man, going through a series of anthemic echoing sections, to a chorus in which the Iowan hits some higher-than-usual notes.

Though challenging, these changes in speed must be fun for drummer Roy Mayorga, which is part of Stone Sour’s aura: pushing themselves in new directions and challenging themselves to try new things. Right around the three minute mark, there is a great twin guitar solo, showcasing the talents of both Josh Rand and Christian Martucci, who replaced long time axe man Jim Root, who still plays for Slipknot.

In all the song is fun, catchy and if you are a Type A personality, totally relatable. I may not be anywhere near as busy as Corey Taylor, but I’m often doing 100 things at once, so I can definitely relate.

If you like this as much as I do, or the other two releases “Song #3” or “Fabuless”, pick up a copy of the soon-to-be-released album Hydrograd, available everywhere music is sold on June 30th, 2017. If you’re a fan of Stone Sour, follow them on Facebook or Twitter.
