Green Day Rips Trump on MLK Day
Earlier today, punk icons Green Day unloaded on President-elect Donald Trump with the video release of “Troubled Times.” In conjunction with Martin Luther King Day, Billy Joe Armstrong shared, “Today we celebrate love and compassion more than ever.” The video doesn’t really back that assertion up though.
The lyric video intersperses historic images of civil disobedience, with clips of a very Trumplike character apparently spewing antagonist hate-inciting crap. The Donald has certainly earned the criticism and mocking, but releasing this video on MLK Day in the spirit of “love and compassion” is bullshit. It’s a good song, with a meaningful message, but sullying Reverend King’s message is a lame, whorish, media attention grab.

And, in the true spirit of what this day is all about, check out the words from MLK himself. A little love and compassion is just what this country needs now:
As you might be able to discern, I’m a bit tired of the incessant hate smothering our country these days, and it is not all coming from our future President. Let’s follow Martin Luther King’s advice…
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
…and be the light.
