Set It Off Album Release Event
Full Sail University
Set It Off, one of the hottest acts on the pop rock scene, returned to their home state and delivered a memorable evening for area fans. The Tampa artists delivered a fun-filled spectacle at Full Sail University in Winter Park. The Set It Off album release event was a celebration of the upcoming release of their evocative third studio album Upside Down.
(Editor: Hey everybody, RARA’s Farm is right in the path of Hurricane Matthew. We’ve been distracted with storm preparations the last two days and have not been able to pore through our Set It Off album release show photos, but we will soon upload a nice set from the event, just as soon as Matthew gets out of our hair. In the meantime, Like / Follow Us on our Facebook Page, so you’ll get an alert when we share them.)
The new release is packed with a dozen creative new pieces that showcase the quartet’s diversity. We see the band’s sound evolving in an impressive way. Each song is a distinct journey with a different vibe and sound. As we heard early this evening, the differences can be attributed to a slew of influences and various producers.
2016 Vans Warped Tour Monster Energy Pit Reporter, Tori Kravitz got the evening started with an hour long Q&A. Cody Carson (Vocals), Dan Clermont(Guitar), Maxx Danziger(Drums) and Zach DeWall(Bass) joined her for the entertaining session.
Kravitz got the ball rolling with a few questions, but the real highlight of the session were those offered up by the fans in attendance.
We learned what fuels them as a band – literally Publix Subs, and metaphorically, their desire to deliver a product every bit as good as that of the artists they emulate the most. They shared their influences, their dream tourmates, their favorite video game (Madden) and a slew of other interesting tidbits. Kudos to the band for giving so many fans the opportunity to interact directly with the band.
I loved learning the backstory of “Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing” off of Duality. The inspirational asses were a band who screwed them over stranding them on their first tour and a guy who basically stole two of their early songs. Intriguing stuff that adds much more to the song.
All of the 500 fans in attendance were there courtesy of free tickets from the band. But, the first 200 through the door were in for a killer bonus. Those early birds had the priceless opportunity to meet the band, snag a photo with Set It Off and get their copies of Upside Down autographed in person.
All of the attendees had the chance to buy an advance copy of the album, an offer that many fans took advantage of. All attendees were also gifted with an album cover poster in a nice touch from the band.
In between the Q&A and Meet & Greet the band delivered an intimate and energetic 30 minute set. They actually started off with the ballad off of Upside Down, “Me Without Us” which was the perfect segue from the intimate Q&A. From there, it was all energy beginning with a spirited version of the title track which was one of many songs they played live for the first time.
“Something New” the track they recorded with Alex of All Time Low was an early favorite,. It’s one of the album tracks that is destined for early and heavy radio play. The highlight of the six song setlist was “Uncontainable.” The song was my favorite on the album and was a huge hit with the Full Sail crowd.
They closed the performance with crowd favorite “Why Worry” which turned into a singalong celebration. All four band members seemed to love the opportunity to finally perform the new tracks in front of a live crowd, made even better by the fact they were back home.
As noted earlier, the new album is a nice canvas for the band to demonstrate their diversity. We see some, pop, a bit of punk and techno as well as a taste of rap. It’s a mixture that will please the band’s loyal fans and surely attract new ones.
