My true appreciation for rock music started as a late night DJ on an alternative rock college station. Until that time, I was your typical teenage fan of 80’s hair bands – that music was good stuff at the time, but the music I discovered dripping through my headphones each night was something special. The music that grabbed my attention back then wasn’t beautifully polished, but instead raw and passionate, and just a little bit dirty.
On my first listen to Journalism’s infectious new single “Faces.” that old familiar feeling washed over me again. I had flashbacks to early REM and Husker Du – this song is different for sure, but still so strangely comfortable. It’s compelling basement rock crawling from the lush depths of the vibrant Brooklyn scene, and it’s a song I can’t get enough of.
Powered by a hard-driving bass line and mesmerizing drums, “Faces” rides on slick guitar riffs, clever pace changes and gritty vocals. It’s a 5:21 of rock and roll beauty, and one of my favorite tracks this year.
